Gugulethu Square was abuzz on Saturday as almost 1,000 people showed up at the launch of the Siyagyma-SA campaign.

The healthy lifestyle initiative is the brainchild of Zane Maqetuka together with the Western Cape Department of Health. The campaign aims to create a strong and sustainable culture of healthy lifestyles amongst South African people.

“I was once an obese child myself and when I changed my lifestyle for the better and I started to adapt to green living I became a healthy lifestyle champion. I started eating vegetables, fruits, seafood and drank lots of water and cut off junk food totally. I started to exercise using my own body as weights and do jogging and walking five times a week for 30 minutes,” said Maqetuka who is also a former Mr SA runner-up.

Residents who went to the launch took part in the 5km walk. Health screenings were also done. There was also yoga hosted by the Eyona Taxi Association as well as Tae-Bo sessions and live entertainment.

“The Project is currently not funded and anyone who wishes to make a contribution can directly email me at mandisimaqetuka [at] gmail.com, as we are planning to collect almost 100,000 running shoes for people who want to train or gym but due to financial difficulties can’t,” said Maqetuka.
