The short answer
Home Affairs offices are not currently renewing any permits.
The whole question
I am a Grade 12 learner and I will soon write my prelim exams. My asylum permit will soon expire. I want to know how I can renew it during this period?
The long answer
Home Affairs offices are only doing marriages and late birth registration during this Level 3 lockdown. They are not renewing any permits now. But they have put out a notice which was officially gazetted in the Government Gazette on 10 June 2020, that any asylum seeker permit or refugee document which had expired from 15 March 2020, or is due to expire soon, will be considered extended up to and including 31 July 2020.
We don’t know yet what will happen after 31 July. Even if Level 3 becomes Level 2 after 31 July, we still don’t know if Home Affairs will open its refugee reception offices to renew permits for asylum seekers and documents for refugees. If they don’t open their offices to renew these permits after 31 July, they will have to extend the period that the permits are considered valid.
