Answer to a question from a reader

Is it possible to transfer an RDP application from one province to another?

The short answer

Unfortunately not. If your application was not approved or if it was approved but you never received a house, you can cancel your application and submit a new one somewhere else.

The whole question

Dear Athalie

I applied for an RDP house in North West in 2004. The application was approved, but the house was never built (even though other housing projects were completed). I later applied for a house in Gauteng but have not heard anything about it yet.  Is it possible to transfer an RDP application from one province to another?

The long answer

I’m afraid it is not possible to transfer an RDP application from one province (North West) to another (Gauteng) even though your application in North West was approved, but the house was never built. This is because each application for a house applies to one specific housing project only, and each application has to be given an erf (plot) number in that project.

If they never built the house that was approved for you, that application can be cancelled, and you would have to apply again in the new province. This would be treated as a new subsidy application, and you would have to meet the requirements for that particular housing project.

[Editor's note: In a previous version of this response, we were unable to give a clear answer on whether it is possible to transfer an RDP application to another province. We subsequently received information that gave a more concrete answer, and issued an update. Apologies for any inconvenience.]

Wishing you the best,
Athalie
