A memorial service was held for Phumeza Nkolonzi on 5 July in Nyanga.

Nkolonzi was open about being lesbian and she spoke out in support of gay and lesbian rights. She was shot dead in front of her grandmother in June, in what some community members are describing as a hate crime.

On 21 July there will be a community meeting in Nyanga to come up with a strategy for dealing with the township’s violence.
