Callies claims first Thabiet Rossier cup

Caledonian Roses Rugby Club, also known as the Callies, from Athlone hosted the tournament at the Noll Avenue Sports Complex, bringing together eight teams in a battle for the trophy and prize money of R5,000 for the winners.

Apart from Callies, teams taking part were MIT Rangers, Primroses Rugby Club, Surrey Estate Rangers, Violets Rugby Club, Islamia High, Groote Schuur High and Spine Road High.

Callies thrashed the Violets 29-10 to claim the first ever Thabiet Rossier Under 14 Legacy Cup. The Surrey Estate Rangers claimed the plate final when they beat MIT Rangers 38-8.

The tournament was played in honour of Thabiet Rossier who was a player and coach at the Caledonian Roses. He died last year of a heart attack on the field.

Caledonian player Herschelle Lakey, 14, said: “It feels good to play in this tournament but we are taking it very seriously. I’m following in my father’s footsteps because he was a rugby player himself.”

Groote Schuur High player Tashrieq Petersen, 14, had never played rugby before. “I’m thankful for this experience,” he said. “Rugby is quite violent but it’s fun to play.”

President of the Caledonian Roses Junior Executive Committee Adiel Carr said the tournament would take place annually. “We are hoping to expand the number of teams next year.”
