Answer to a question from a reader

Is it possible to switch my 2-month-old baby from breastmilk to formula?

The short answer

We suggest that you ask your healthcare provide to make sure the advice is most suited to you.

The whole question

Dear GroundUp

I’m HIV positive and my baby tested negative on her 6-week visit. Can I switch her to formula now? I’m going back to work and my milk flow is slow when I pump.

The long answer

The guidelines for breastfeeding vary. Sometimes circumstances change and you might need to change what you feed your baby and it is usually fine. But talking to your local HIV clinic will provide the best advice for when and how to go about this.
