Answer to a question from a reader

How much does it cost to apply for a new visa in South Africa?

The short answer

Visa application fees vary but all must be paid in addition to the VFS application fee of R1,550.

The long answer

Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to confirm fees for different visas – partly because the Home Affairs general info on visas page was last updated in 2016 and doesn't mention costs.

We consulted an immigration specialist who provided the information below. They noted that applicants may incur additional costs depending on the visa. For example, a medical report is required for all long-term applications and, dependent on where they are obtained, can be free of charge or cost over R700.

All visa and permit applications have to be submitted at a local VFS office in South Africa and they charge R1,550 per application. In addition, visa fees are as follows:

  • South African spousal and life partner visas and permits – no charge by the DHA
  • Relative's visa for children - no charge by the DHA
  • Relative's visa for other family members – R425
  • Work visas including Critical skills work visas – R1,520
  • Other temporary residence visas - R425
