Answer to a question from a reader

My late husband worked at Impala Platinum Mine in Springs. How can I find his provident fund?

The short answer

Contact HR at Impala Platinum to ask them which provident fund your husband belonged to.

The long answer

There are three provident funds operating at Impala Platinum Mine in Springs:

  • The Impala Refineries Provident Fund, which is for workers in the precious and base metal refineries.

  • The Impala Workers Provident Fund, which is for general workers.

  • The Mineworkers Provident Fund, which negotiates benefits between the Chamber of Mines and the National Union of Mineworkers

To find out which provident fund your husband belonged to, you can

  1. Contact the employer at  011 360 3111 and ask to speak to HR (Human Resources), which can go through the Fund administration records to see which fund he belonged to.

  2. Contact the Mineworkers Provident Fund at 010 100 3001 and check if he was a member of that provident fund.

  3. You can also search the official Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) unclaimed benefits search portal to check if there are benefits listed under his name and ID number. You can email the FSCA at [email protected] or phone them at 0800 20 3722 at their toll-free number.

These are the documents that you will need to claim his provident fund:

  • A certified copy of your husband’s South African ID

  • A certified copy of your own ID

  • His death certificate

  • Your marriage certificate to prove that you were a legal dependent or spouse

  • Your own bank statement or bank confirmation letter which should not be older than three months

  • Any old payslips that you can find.

Ask the employer or whichever provident fund he belonged to exactly what you have to do to claim your husband’s provident fund

Wishing you the best,
Athalie
