How long do I need to work before I qualify to claim UIF?

The short answer

You should earn one day’s UIF credit for every four days worked.

The whole question

Dear Athalie

I claimed UIF in 2023 after working as a teacher assistant in 2022. I then got a six-month contract as a general teaching assistant which started on 1 June 2025 and ended on 31 November 2025. My employer didn't give me my UI-19 form and said that they would submit it on my behalf. My UIF claim was then rejected three times without reason being given.

When I enquried, I was told that I had no credits. When I went to the Labour department, they said I had to work for at least four years before I could claim again. Please help me claim my UIF benefits. 

The long answer

There are often misunderstandings about the 4-year cycle: you earn one day’s UIF credit for every four days worked, and you can only claim the maximum 365 credits if you have worked for the last four years. The Labour Department will take the last four years into account when calculating credits, but you certainly do not have to wait for four years to access the credits earned in your latest six-month contract. 

Labour Dynamix says that a six-month contract of about 130 working days would normally earn between 32 and 33 credits, or roughly five weeks’ credit. 

But UIF saying you have no credits after a six-month contract, known as a Section 13(6) UIF Rejection, despite your claiming two years ago, may be because the previous claim period has not been properly “closed off” in the system. The previous claim's payment cycle must be fully cleared and closed by the Department of Employment and Labour in their system before new credits can be uploaded. This is a common technical glitch. Labour Dynamix says that many people have received these Section 13(6) UIF Rejections, and many times this has happened because the UIF system has not yet linked your new contributions to your credit record after a previous claim.  

Also, the six-month contract you had in 2025 requires your employer to submit monthly UI-19 forms / Employer Declarations. If these are not on the system, the UIF system will show no contributions. 

So what can you do?

Labour Dynamix says that you should first check your Employer Declarations: Log in to U-Filing and check that the employer declarations for the six months of your contract are captured and appear under the employer’s UIF reference number. If they are there, the credits just have to be recalculated. You will need your ID number for access to view contributions, claim status, and available credits.  

Then make printed copies of the declarations (or take screenshots of them) and take them, with your ID and proof of your contract having ended (or UI-19 form), to the Labour Centre and ask them to do a manual recheck of your credits in the UIMaster system. This manual refresh will force UIF to recognise the credits you earned in your six-month contract. 

If your credits still don’t appear, you should make a formal appeal. 

To appeal a rejected Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claim, you must submit a UI-12 Notice of Appeal form to your nearest Labour Centre within 90 days of receiving the rejection. Include supporting documentation, such as corrected employer records, to justify why the rejection should be overturned.
