Answer to a question from a reader

How long does it take to get an ID card?

The short answer

It seems to take two to three weeks on average to get your smart ID card.

The long answer

Home Affairs will send an SMS to the cell phone number you gave them when you applied, to let you know when you can collect your ID from the branch where you applied. To get an SMS update, you can SMS the word "ID" followed by your ID number to 32551. You will be charged R1 for each SMS sent.

You can also track your application on the Home Affairs website.

When you collect it, Home Affairs will do fingerprint verification and take photos to make sure the ID is going to the right person.

If you need it for an urgent application, you can get a Temporary Identification Certificate immediately. It will cost R70 and you will have to give them two photos and your ID number.

Wishing you the best,
Athalie
