Riot breaks out at Matthew Goniwe High School in Khayelitsha

A riot broke out at Matthew Goniwe High School in Site B, Khayelitsha from about 1pm to 2pm this afternoon.

Four grade 12 learners were expelled by the principal for failing to attend winter school. Other grade 12 learners began protesting, demanding that the expelled learners be allowed back. According to eye witnesses GroundUp spoke to, learners burned desks and damaged teachers’ cars. A journalist’s car was stoned. Learners also threw stones at the school. The teachers called the police and three learners were arrested. The police also released a stun grenade.
