More than 50 pro-Palestine activists protested outside the US Consulate in Cape Town on Friday, calling for America to end its support for Israel’s war in Gaza.

This comes the morning after Israel’s cabinet decided to further expand its military occupation and completely take over Gaza City.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) said in a statement: “The United States government has blood on its hands.

“The US continues to fund, arm and politically shield Israel’s apartheid regime. From vetoing UN cease-fire resolutions to supplying the bombs that flatten homes and hospitals, the US is not a neutral observer; it is a direct accomplice in genocide.”

The Israeli security cabinet has approved a plan to take over Gaza City.

Lining the pavement opposite the consulate, the protesters held placards, such as one that that read “starving babies is not self-defence”. They chanted “Trump Trump, you will fail, Palestine is not for sale” and “US, US, you can’t hide, the world sees the genocide”.

They also banged empty pots and pans to symbolise famine in Gaza.

Israel’s new plan to take control of Gaza City has been condemned by world leaders. The UN’s Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called for the plan to be stopped immediately to prevent further displacement and killing.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday it is “pretty much up to Israel” on whether to take control of Gaza. The US had not made a statement on Israel’s approved plan by the time of publication.

Protesters hold up placards criticising Trump.
