Prison visits reinstated as National State of Disaster ends
Covid mandatory protocols and regulations will still be adhered to during visits

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is reinstating prison visits at all correctional centres after President Cyril Ramaphosa terminated the National State of Disaster on Monday evening.
In a statement on Wednesday, spokesperson Sechaba Mphahlele said DCS had reviewed its Covid risk-adjusted strategy and decided to permit visits for inmates with immediate effect.
He said all relevant Covid mandatory protocols and regulations will still be adhered to during visits.
Under lockdown alert level 1, prison visits were limited to two visitors per inmate per month, and only one visitor at a time.
Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) spokesperson Emerantia Cupido said Inspecting Judge (IJ) Justice Edwin Cameron wrote to Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola on Tuesday asking the minister to intercede and allow the resumption of contact visits for those inmates who qualify.
“Contact visits are considered to be an important beacon and focus for inmates, as well as providing sustenance and encouragement to them,” said Cupido. “These last two years of lockdown have been even harder on inmates and DCS staff in relation to the broader public.”
Mphahlele said the total number of recorded Covid DCS fatalities to date is 357 (242 officials and 115 inmates).
Over 23,000 (58%) officials and nearly 112,000 (87%) inmates have been vaccinated, Mphahlele said.

Prison visits still remain as they were under Level 1 lockdown being:
A group prisoners: 2 non-contact visits a month, 1 vistors only, no children allowed.
B Group prisoners 1 non-contact visit a month, 1 visitor only, no children allowed.
When the President spoke, they said they're waiting for Minister Lamola to let them know.
When DCS spokesperson said in his statement attached here that visits are opened, they said they're waiting for the Head of Prison.
That's just how prisoners are treated by DCS.
