Arrested UKZN students to remain in custody
State opposes bail for 19 protesters
Nineteen University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) students arrested on various charges are to remain in custody for the next week, after bail was denied at two hearings in Pietermaritzburg.
Eight students arrested last Friday on charges of public violence were denied bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.
The students will remain in custody until 11 October.
Eleven others, arrested on 22 September on the Pietermaritzburg campus, appeared in court on Friday on charges of damage to property, public violence, failing to comply with a police order and assault.
The hearing was postponed to 10 October and bail was denied at the request of the state.
The magistrate told the gallery full of students that she needed time to view a video showing the behaviour of the arrested students.
Students also gathered outside the court in support of the arrested students. They chanted struggle songs and songs directed at Minister for Higher Education Blade Nzimande.
Students’ Representative Committee member Nhlakanipho Ndlovu said the students were angry at the court decision to deny bail.
“We believed strongly that today students would be given justice. We are going to continue with our protest. We know that this country can afford free education, as ministers are busy splashing million of rands just for the fun of it.”
