Shuttleworth Grant - 2018
In June 2018, GroundUp’s editor Nathan Geffen was nominated for a Shuttleworth Foundation flash grant by Shuttleworth Fellow, Steve Song, to the value of $5,000 USD.
Flash Grants are awarded by nomination only, from Shuttleworth Fellows, to individuals they would like to support/reward/encourage in their work for social good.
GroundUp applied the grant to its general operating costs, specifically using the funds to pay freelancer rates for a number of human rights news stories we published in December 2018. Since GroundUp publishes its content under a creative commons license, most of these stories were republished on some of South Africa’s largest news websites – News24, TimesLive and Daily Maverick.
We want our stories to be republished as widely as possible. In order to do that we don't charge for content. We don’t rely on advertising or corporate funding so we can focus on news that matters rather than stories that will get clicks. We are grateful to Steve and the Shuttleworth Foundation for supporting our work and helping keep GroundUp independent and our news free.
