Readers help Khayelitsha crèche recover from robbery
Readers of a GroundUp story about a Khayelitsha crèche that was robbed last month have responded generously by donating over R10,000 to the facility.
On 12 March, staff at the QQ Community Crèche in site B, Khayelitsha were robbed at gunpoint by three men. Their monthly wages and cellphones were stolen.
Chairperson at the crèche Nokwandisa Fukula said she had just returned from withdrawing her staff’s monthly wages when the incident occurred.
The crèche, which caters for 76 children aged between three months and six years, was started in 2009 after parents in the area raised money to build it.
Before escaping on foot between the surrounding shacks, Fukula said the men locked the staff inside the small crèche and threw the key near the door.
Following Fukula’s plea for assistance in an interview with GroundUp soon after the incident, dozens of people have donated to the crèche.
In a brief interview on Wednesday, Fukula said they have received over R10,000 in donations to date.
“We are just so happy because every little [bit] helps. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped us. We really struggled,” she said.
Fukula said the money would be used to back pay her staff’s wages and to buy groceries for the children.
Also, a local representative from the Spur group, who asked not to be named, has today indicated that the company will also be donating mattresses to the crèche.
