South Africa’s tag rugby team recently visited a township school, Masiphumelele primary school, in Makhaza, Khayelitsha. This was a very exciting visit for the learners of Masiphumelele, who only get to see the Bokke on television.
Tag rugby involves no contact. It is much safer than standard rugby and a BEE company called Tag Rugby Promotions is encouraging its uptake.
The tag rugby team is currently doing a tour around South Africa, where they visit schools and give motivational talks. Their message is a simple one. They encourage learners to say no to drugs, crime, gangsterism and bullying. They also encourage physical activities and exercise.
Chumani Mguga, a programme manager of the South African tag rugby team tour, told GroundUp that their visit to Masiphumelele was a highlight, because they got to speak to 1,200 learners for the first time.
The tag rugby team bought many gifts such as T-shirts, caps and keyholders for the learners.
