Radio Zibonele, a community radio station in Khayelitsha, organised a fun run for Khayelitsha residents on Saturday 6 October.
Old gogos and mkhulus (grandmothers and grandfathers) were walking for fun with their walking sticks while their grandchildren were running. The event attracted participants across age groups. The youngest participant was just five years old. She walked eight kilometres.
Three men and three women won prizes sponsored by several companies. The first person to finish was Lindikhaya Mthangayi, followed by Nomvuyisi Seti and they each won R1 000. The second prize went to Sibusiso Magwaza and Khanya Mateyise, who won R500 each. Third place prizes of R250 went to Sihle Maphukathe and Lusanda Mesilane.
Hlumisa Matshobongwane is the sales and marketing manager of Radio Zibonele. She was also the organiser. According to Matshobongwane two charities benefitted from the event. Qaqamba Home Safety looks after 18 children who have been abandoned and the Baphumelele Home looks after 30 children who are either HIV-positive or have lost their parents to AIDS. Both homes received R3,000 each. The Treatment Action Campaign Runners for Health group also took part in the fun run.
