GroundUp journalist Nokobonga Yawa explains how she travels to work in Rondebosch from one of Khayelitsha’s suburbs.
To get to work in Rondebosch from Makhaza, a section of Khayelitsha, I have to take a Golden Arrow bus. While there are buses directly from Khayelitsha to Rondebosch, they are scarce. So most of the time people travelling my route will take a bus to Claremont and then take another one to Rondebosch. I have a weekly bus ticket costing R88.
Nikelwa Mkhutsgulwa, who travels the route to Claremont, wakes up at 05:40, rushing for the 06:30 bus. She works in Lansdowne. She can walk to work from her bus stop, but it takes her an hour and a half to get to work by 8am.
